Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Booth AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Booth AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Booth AL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whichever state you elect to practice in.

student attending online sonography class in Booth ALAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Booth AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Booth home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Booth AL area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Booth AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Booth AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Booth health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Booth AL home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Booth AL area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
