They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Elmore AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Elmore AL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Elmore AL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Elmore ALAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Elmore AL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Elmore home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Elmore AL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Elmore AL area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Elmore AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Elmore AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Elmore health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Elmore AL home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Elmore AL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
